light
then to contrast
then symmetry
curves of bodies
trained along limbs
arms snaking
up the tree trunk
leg from torso as limb from trunk — gaunt appendages branching out,
hands caress bark
five toes dangle above
the forest floor
the others
buried. deep as roots

Katharine Westaway earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida in 2011. Her poetry has been published in various journals including The Amherst Review and The Blue Collar Review. She enjoys balmy winters in the Sunshine State and temperate summers at her family’s lake house in Tennessee.
